Impaired Driver Clinical Screening and Assessment Services

Have you been arrested for a DWAI (Driving While Ability Impaired), DWI (Driving While Intoxicated/Impaired), Aggravated DWI, DUI (Driving Under the Influence), or another impaired driving offense? If so, you are likely required by the court, your lawyer, or the Impaired Driver Services (IDS) program to undergo an assessment or screening. The New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS) mandates that you receive a clinical screening and assessment from an OASAS-approved provider.

As an approved NYS OASAS Clinical Provider, I offer clinical screening, assessment, evaluation, and treatment services for impaired driving offenders and individuals with substance use disorders. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with a second Master’s degree in Addiction Studies, and I am a Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CASAC). My services adhere to the NYS OASAS General Service Standards for Clinical Services provided to individuals arrested for impaired driving offenses.

DUI Evaluation and Assessment Services

Welcome to our DUI Evaluation and Assessment services. If you have been arrested for driving under the influence (DUI), you may be required to undergo a comprehensive DUI evaluation and assessment. This process is essential for understanding the extent of any substance use issues and determining appropriate next steps. Our goal is to provide a thorough and supportive evaluation to help you navigate this challenging time.

You’re ready to move forward with confidence.

What to Expect

There are several required components of the Clinical Screening and Assessment. Understanding each step can help you feel more prepared for the process. Here's what you can expect:

1. Answering Questions Regarding Alcohol or Drug Use: You will need to answer several questions about your alcohol or drug use. This involves completing several standardized screening instruments and questionnaires.

2. Toxicology Test and Urinalysis: You will need to schedule an appointment for an alcohol and drug screening test performed by a laboratory. This test includes a Urine Drug Screen (UDS) with an EtG test (ethyl glucuronide) and a minimum of 10 panels.

3. Questions About Your Personal Life: An in-person or online Telehealth Psychosocial assessment will be conducted to gather information about your behavioral health history and relevant details regarding the incident.

4. Interview with Collateral Sources: You will need to bring someone who can speak about you or allow the evaluator to contact someone who can provide relevant information. This step involves an interview with collateral sources, such as family members, friends, or employers, who can provide additional insights into your behavior and history.

The Process

Typically, the Impaired Driver Clinical Screening and Assessment is completed in one 60-90 minute session, provided all necessary documentation is submitted at least 5 business days before our appointment. The Clinical Screening and Assessment is a two-step process:

Step 1: Documentation Submission

Before attending the Clinical Screening and Assessment, the following documents must be submitted for review:

  • Signed NYS OASAS Consent Form: Consent to enter information into the NYS Impaired Drivers System (IDS).

  • Abstract Driving Record: A complete driving record from the DMV.

  • Official Documentation of the Violation: Copies of the arrest report, incident report, and traffic ticket.

  • Driver’s License: A photocopy or scan of your driver’s license.

  • Completed Packet of Questionnaires and Measures: All provided forms and questionnaires must be filled out.

  • Completed Collateral Contact Information: Contact details for individuals or organizations who can provide additional information about you.

  • Results of a Urine Drug Screen (UDS): The UDS must include the EtG test (ethyl glucuronide) and a minimum of 10 panels. Schedule an appointment to provide the UDS sample at an approved lab (e.g., National Drug Screening, Accredited Drug Testing, or other NYS OASAS approved labs). Ensure the UDS results are submitted within four days of scheduling and at least 5-7 business days before our appointment.

Step 2: Clinical Screening and Assessment Interview

The Screening and Assessment interview involves evaluating the circumstances leading up to your arrest, your history and patterns of alcohol and substance use, and your overall psychological and social functioning. This session is an opportunity to reflect on the role of alcohol and substances in your life and their consequences.

Key Components of the Interview:

  • Circumstances of Arrest: Discuss the events leading up to your DUI arrest.

  • Substance Use History: Explore your history and patterns of alcohol and substance use.

  • Psychological and Social Functioning: Evaluate your overall mental health and social behavior.

Our Approach: Safety, trust, and honesty are paramount. We strive to create a non-judgmental and supportive environment where you can openly discuss your substance use and its impact on your life.

Post-Assessment

Once the Clinical Screening and Assessment is completed, you can request a written report to submit to the referral source. Client information will be entered into the NYS IDS, provided you sign the consent form. We will also offer appropriate treatment recommendations and referrals based on the assessment findings.
